Trip to Dauphin, MB in 2000 St. Peter's Abbey, Muenster, SK. Benedictine monks established St. Peter's Colony in 1903, five years before the town of Muenster was incorporated. The colony originally consisted of a log church and 16-room monastery. St. Peter's Abbey currently has 34 Benedictine monks, including 20 priests, and 14 brothers. St Peter's operates a college (affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan), a printing press and weekly newspaper (The Prairie Messenger), and a machine shop. The machine shop mainly supports the monks' agricultural ventures, but we also discovered several hand-built bicycles and adult tricycles around the monastery. 1139-0085 |
