Tool Kit for touring My basic tool kit when I'm on tour (alone or with a group) fits easily within a pannier or seat bag. In addition, this photo shows a few accessories that I normally carry on the bike (e.g. lights, locks). Many people like to carry multi-tools that combine several tools into a single, lightweight item. I prefer discrete components in my tool kit. I find that individual tools are built to closer tolerances, so they don't strip the heads off bolds, and stand up to hard use better than lightweight tools. Plus, I know that my tools fit every part or accessory on my bicycle, so there are no unpleasant surprises awaiting me when I have to make repairs on the road. Contents: (above the tool wrap, left to right) tire patch kit (patches, glue, emery cloth, tire boot material and spare tube of unopened glue), pressure gauge (presta), shock pump (for Cane Creek AR-5 shock on my recumbent), tire levers, tire pump, flashlight, rear tail light, head lamp; (on the tool wrap, left to right) spoke wrenches (three sizes), multi-bit screwdriver (#1, #2, #3 Phillips; 3/16", 1/4" common, #2 Robertson), crank puller (with 15 mm crank wrench), spare nuts and bolts (in film container), chain tool, allen wrenches (three sizes, unmarked, that came with various accessories used on the bike), 8 mm, 9 mm and 10 mm box wrenches, adjustable wrench, Leatherman tool (pliers, wire cutter, crimper, saw, knife, can opener, #2 Phillips, jewellers screwdriver, file, awl/punch, various common screwdrivers, ruler), 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm allen wrenches, 17 mm box wrench, 14 mm and 15 mm crank wrench (also fits Sachs 3x7 hub on my recumbent); (below the tool wrap) large shackle Kryptonite lock, 6' cable lock. Not shown: one roll of cloth hockey stick tape (duct tape works just as well), assorted zip ties, spare chain links, spare light bulbs, spare shifter cable, spare brake cable (for rear brake, can be cut shorter for front), freewheel remover, bottom bracket remover (I don't carry a large wrench for turning the freewheel and bottom bracket tools, but expect to be able to make it to a service station where I can borrow one), small notepad and pencil. The tool wrap is made from a pant leg from an old pair of cotton slacks. Previous | Home | Next |
