Employment Opportunities

We love to receive your job applications. However, when applying for employment with us, please keep in mind that as a small company we hire only a few people each year. There are two types of employment you can apply for: tour leader (or assistant tour leader) and bicycling instructor.

Tour Leadership Positions

Wherever possible, I like to lead tours myself. Occasionally, I need to hire additional leaders and assistant leaders. A tour leader organizes and coordinates a bicycle tour and is responsible for the happiness and well being of tour participants. An assistant tour leader has fewer responsibilities for organizing the tour, but shares equally in responsibilities toward the customer.

Before you apply for a job as tour leader or assistant tour leader, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • Standard First Aid, certified within the past 12 months, is required;
  • CPR, Basic Life Saver Level C, certified within the past 12 months, is required;
  • CAN-BIKE Skills II Cyclist certification (or Effective Cycling equivalent) is required;
  • CAN-BIKE Touring Skills, Tour Leadership, or Designing and Organizing Bicycle Tours is desirable;
  • Experience leading and organizing tours is highly desirable;
  • CAN-BIKE Level II Instructor certification is desirable;
  • Degree or diploma in a post-secondary program in adventure tourism or related field is desirable;
  • A certificate in Safe Food Handling may be required, depending on the position;
  • A valid drivers license may be required, depending on the position; and
  • At least one reference is preferred when applying (see below).

Extensive experience riding or touring by bicycle is not usually sufficient to gain employment as a tour leader. As impressive at it may seem to have ridden solo across Africa, Canada or the USA, I'm more impressed if you can help a novice cyclist ride confidently to work, or have helped organize club or charity events in your home town. How you interact with others and your ability to manage a group are of primary importance.

Bicycling Instructor

Each year, I hire up to six instructors for five weeks to provide bicycle safety instruction to elementary students. In addition, I occasionally need one or two CAN-BIKE II Instructors to teach adult courses. If you are interested in applying for either of these positions, you must first meet the following qualifications:

CAN-BIKE II Instructor:

  • Standard First Aid, certified within the past 12 months, is required;
  • CPR, Basic Life Saver Level C, certified within the past 12 months, is required;
  • CAN-BIKE Level II Instructor certification is required;
  • Previous experience teaching CAN-BIKE Skills II courses is desirable; and
  • At least one reference is preferred when applying (see below).

Kids CAN-BIKE Instructor:

  • Standard First Aid, certified within the past 12 months, is required;
  • CPR, Basic Life Saver Level C, certified within the past 12 months, is required;
  • Experience teaching or leading youth or children is preferred;
  • Preference is given to students enrolled in post-secondary programs in education, nursing, medicine, kinesiology or similar professions;
  • If you are not already a Kids CAN-BIKE Instructor, you must successfully complete a CAN-BIKE Skills II Cyclist course and Kids CAN-BIKE Instructor Seminar before starting employment (we provide this training at no charge if your application is accepted);
  • You must expect to undergo a criminal record check before being accepted for employment;
  • At least one reference is required when applying (see below).

There is usually a waiting list of qualified candidates.

References

Our best leaders and instructors are those who have been referred directly to us. Although I look at every application, I prefer those accompanied by a personal recommendation from someone I know. If your application has been referred to me by a client, another instructor or another agency who knows us, you are much more likely to be accepted for employment. This is not as daunting as it appears. We have clients and contacts throughout North America (and recently two of our instructors have begun teaching in Brazil).

We will need at least three references if you are called for an interview (you don't need to tell us who they are before then).

Sending your application

The best way to send an application is by email. A resume in plain text within the body of the message is sufficient, preceded by an introduction highlighting your strong points. If you must include attachments, any popular word processing format is acceptable. I read and respond to every application.
