Help
prevent bicycling injuries in children News
Release Saskatoon,
SK (Canada) -- The Canadian Cycling Association has selected Saskatchewan
as one of four sites across Canada to establish Kids' CAN-BIKE Festivals
in 1996. The Kids'
CAN-BIKE Festival is a playground-based cycling event for children 8 to
13 years of age. It introduces children to key skills that prevent cycling
injuries and teaches them how to adjust their helmets, check their bikes
for mechanical problems, and prevent bicycle thefts. The Festival is taught
by trained instructors. It is an introductory event that encourages children
and parents to seek out on-road education through the Kids' CAN-BIKE course
(otherwise known as the Cycle Right course). Through
a grant provided by Health Canada's Fitness Program, the Canadian Cycling
Association will assume the costs associated with training Festival leaders,
marketing and delivery of Festivals, help establish community partnerships,
and assist in the development of a community Festival schedule. Training
of Festival leaders will begin in April, with the first Kids' CAN-BIKE
Festivals planned for late May (during a national kick-off week). Associations,
clubs and other groups or organizations are needed to host Kids CAN-BIKE
Festivals, recruit Festival leaders and volunteers, or provide Festival
venues.
