Day 7, Saturday
Lemon Creek to Nelson (61 km / 38 mi)
We
continue our ride through the "Silvery Slocan", as the area became known.
During the 1890s, prospectors discovered the largest silver-lead deposits
in British Columbia. Mines around Slocan, New Denver, Silverton, Sandon
and all along our route created a booming economy until early in the 20th
Century. During the past three decades, the Slocan and Kooteany valleys
have seen a different kind of boom, becoming the refuge of painters, weavers,
writers and other artists.
If
Nelson seems familiar, it might be because the 1987 movie Roxanne,
starring comedian Steve Martin as a modern-day Cyrano de Bergerak, was
filmed here. The city of 9,150 sits on the slopes of the Slekirk Mountains
overlooking the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.
